Pierre Reverdy
translated by Dom Hale
For the time being
Life is simple and ace
The clear sun makes a tender sound
Clatter of the bells has calmed down
Light sails across everything this morning
My head’s like the illuminations
And the room I rent’s lit up at last
Just one beam is fine
Just one laughing fit
My happiness shaking the house
Holds those who want to die
In the notes of its song
My singing’s tone deaf
Ah it’s pretty funny
Mouth open to all winds
Slings insane notes everywhere
I’ve no clue how they get out
Winging towards the ears of others
Listen I’m not mad
I’m just creasing on the bottom step
Of the door thrown open
In that same sunlight scattered
Over green vines on the wall
And my arms are held out
It’s today that I love you
From another sky
What do you want me to be
Feel like I’m dying
Mayday
Hey Paris, the Pont Neuf
I know this city
A little cum
A little moaning
My life
Is it even worth mentioning
I’m sure anybody would say similar
And how else would you pass the time
I imagine some other landscape
A forgotten lover reveals their face
Obscure region
Faded sky
Native land returning to me each morning
The journey was long
I lost some feathers along the way
And my illusions collapsed one by one
Yet I was still in the pivot of spring
Barely more than a kid
I advanced
A rattling train carried me
Bit by bit I forgot nature
The station was close
We changed carriages
And on the platform no one was waiting
The dead and decimated city
Raises its blast furnaces over there
What will become of me
Somebody strokes my forehead with a cursed shadow
A hand
But what I thought I saw was only smoke from the train
I’m alone
Yeah all alone
No one came to take my hand
Tip of the wing
I love you completely just as you are, he’d say.
With these lovers of such a chained ideal, you quickly come to the weariness of extinguished appetites. The moon’s nourished so many men who’ve handed us down their revulsion.
But the sun persists. The branches of the trees nod off as it grows dark on earth.
When the atmosphere gets hard and vibrates, green eyes blink in the rays. Their hearts send blood back to their material souls. The stone halts eternal steps on the beaten path of a sterile and unequal struggle.
But faced with such pointless soaring, the broke man, sovereign of himself, keeps the dignity of silence.
Live flesh
Stand up carcass and march
Nowt new under the yellow sun
The louis d’or to end all louis d’or
The light that detaches
under time’s dandruff
Lock on the heart that erupts
Silk thread
Lead thread
Blood thread
After these waves of silence
These love tokens of black horsehair
Sky smoother than your eye
Neck twisted by narcissism
My life in the wings
Where I see death’s rippling harvests
Avid hands kneading loaves of smoke
Heavier than the pillars of the universe
Heads vacuous
Hearts stripped bare
Hands perfumed
Tentacles of the apes that aim for the cloud hordes
Among crow’s feet of these winces
A straight line strains
A nerve contorts
The sea’s full up
Love
Bitter grin of death
Pierre Reverdy (1889-1960) was a French poet from Narbonne. The founder of the magazine Nord-Sud (1917-18), he developed a language of obscure lyric simplicity and concentrated poetic prose in early twentieth-century Paris among the city's literary and artistic avant-garde, before withdrawing into seclusion to Solesmes for the last three decades of his life. Reverdy's greatest works include Poèmes en prose (Prose Poems) (1915), his first book, and Le Chant des morts (The Song of the Dead) (1948), a sequence of outraged and intense poems of the Second World War accompanied by drawings from the poet's old friend Pablo Picasso.
Dom Hale is an editor of Ludd Gang, the magazine of the Poets' Hardship Fund, and Chaff Press. Recent books include First Nettles (The Last Books, 2025) and Faint Portal (Distance No Object, 2023), as well as two collaborations with the poet Tom Crompton, Mud Ramps and Earthstepper (both Gong Farm, 2025 and 2026). He lives in Southend, UK.
